History of The Church of Our Lady before Tyn

Actually, there was another Romanesque church on the spot around the 11th century. That church was built by the foreign merchant. In the year of 1256 that Romanesque church was replaced with an early style gothic church.  Especially from the beginning of the 14th century, construction works were started to intensify. Matthias of Arras who was a French architect and Peter Parler who was a German-bohemian architect were influenced the gothic style of the church. The construction of the church was nearly completed at the beginning of the 15th century, except the towers, gable and roof.

The entire construction of the church was completed in 1511 by the addition of Hussites, John of Rokycan (archbishop of Prague) and George of Podebrady. There was the sculpture of George of Podebrady inside the church just under the symbol of the Hussites, a big golden chalice. But these kinds of sculptures were removed and replaced by the sculpture of the Virgin Mary in 1626 after the starting of the Counter-Reformation occurred by the loss of the Battle of White Mountain in 1960.
